My Journey into Parenthood and Coaching

Just a few months into motherhood, I had a gut feeling I was on a one-way journey away from my old self and that parenting was about to redefine my life’s purpose. When I realized my son wasn’t developing typically, I found myself in completely unknown territory. Determined to do my very best to support him, I dived into research and reached out to specialists for guidance. My child had a way of pushing our buttons, and I was culturally conditioned to look outward for solutions instead of looking within and doing the inner work (the hard work!).

All relationships are mirrors, but children have a unique way of reflecting the parts of us that need healing. I can confirm that my toddler was holding this mirror right in my face—he was my greatest awakener. In turn, I was willing to go the extra mile to become exactly the mother he needed.

Parenthood is full of ups and downs, and how we face these challenges shapes our character and the path our lives take.

My second pregnancy, which was nothing short of a miracle, brought its own set of challenges, as I spent months hospitalized, far from home. During that tough time, I tapped into my inner strength and learned to trust my intuition. I began to see challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation.

With two children, one with special needs, I realized I needed a big shift in priorities. I learned that by slowing down and focusing on my well-being, I was better equipped to nurture and guide my children.

A few years later, like many moms of neurodivergent kids, I found that as my children became more autonomous, I had more time to focus on myself. I chose to make a sharp change in my career path, moving from an M. Sc in Geography to becoming a Certified Conscious Parenting Coach.

I had been reading Dr. Shefali Tsabary’s books, and her approach deeply resonated with me. Dr. Shefali is a world-renowned clinical psychologist who has been endorsed by Oprah for her revolutionary work. I earned my certification from her Conscious Parenting Coaching Institute and was trained by her and her team.

Conscious parenting is about mastering how to connect with ourselves and our children on a deeper level. It helps parents gain their child's trust, allowing them to influence rather than control or teach through fear. This approach is especially important for parents of children with special needs, where communication can be tricky. By attuning to both our own and our child’s needs, we learn to respond rather than react, breaking free from dysfunctional generational patterns. It allows us to bring more intention and awareness to our relationships—no more blaming, yelling, bribing, or punishing.

This journey of self-discovery has been transformative, and now I’m excited to share my insights with others on a similar path. While perfect parenting doesn’t exist, the goal is progress. We’re growing together with our children; we’re growing en famille.

The Growing en Famille Artwork

Growing en Famille Artwork by Julie Herman Lemelin

Beautifully designed by my friend Julie Herman Lemelin, an art therapist who perfectly captured my vision of a family emotionally growing together.

This illustration has several layers, and I absolutely love the different ways it can be interpreted depending where you are on your parenting journey. At first glance, I see a deeply connected family with kids calmly resting in their parents’ arms. Those seeking for a deeper meaning will see the concept of reparenting; each parent soothing their inner child. This reflects the true goal of Growing en Famille; a generation of parents committed to their own healing as the foundation of an emotionally safe childhood for their own kids, and thus fostering a more conscious generation.
